It can be a challenge to find a good bass teacher in Orange County, although there are a plethora of them out there. Many bass teachers are excellent players, but that doesn’t necessarily make them a good teacher. An excellent music instructor will have a structured method to work through with each student. They will optimize it along the way to customize for the individual student’s needs and goals. Mark Hamrock with Hamrock Music states “I get a lot of students that have taken bass lessons with other teachers. and they tell me that they would go into their lesson and the teacher would ask them what they wanted to learn that day. That always blows me away! The student doesn’t know what they don’t know!” Mark laughs. “You’re paying the instructor to teach you what you need to know”.
In his 16 plus years of teaching bass lessons, Mark has developed a method for supercharging his student’s playing and musical comprehension. “I like to teach my bass students how to construct bass lines using intervals, triads, and scales, rather than just have them learn songs all day long. Learning a song is way more effective if the student understands what they are playing instead of just regurgitating notes written on a page” says Mark.
